Swiss teams drop out of Uefa Cup

Two Swiss football teams – FC Basel and FC Zurich – failed to qualify on Thursday for the last 16 round of the Uefa Cup.

Sporting Club of Portugal overhelmed Basel in the northern Swiss city 3-0 to finish with an aggregate score of 5-0.

Leading 2-0 after the first leg in Lisbon last week, the visitors enjoyed a perfect start, scoring in the second minute and leaving Basel with little hope.

Basel always looked vulnerable at the back and Brazilian strike Liedsen exposed their defensive failings with goals either side of the half-time break.

Swiss football champions FC Zurich were easily held at bay 0-0 in Hamburg as the Bundesliga side eased through to the next round of the competition.

Trailing 3-1 after last week’s first leg, Zurich began the match knowing they had to score three times to keep their chances alive, yet it never looked likely.

Hamburg now face Bayer Leverkusen in the next round, while Sporting Lisbon face Bolton Wanderers.
