Zurich overcome Geneva for hockey crown

Zurich overcome Geneva for hockey crown Zurich have won the Swiss hockey league title for the sixth time, beating Geneva-Servette four matches to two in the championship playoffs.

The Zurich team won its fourth straight game on Thursday after losing the first two in the final series. All six matches were tight affairs, with the last one ending in a penalty shoot-out for the title.

Canadian Dominic Pittis was the only player to score in the shoot-out, giving Zurich their first championship win since 2001.

Geneva had finished the regular season in second place, while Zurich were sixth after spending the earlier part of the season among the worst performing teams.

Bern, who dominated the regular season, were unexpectelly eliminated by Fribourg-Gottéron in the quarterfinals.
