ETH rated Europe’s best non-British university

The Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) has climbed four places in the Times Higher Education-QS World University Rankings to 20th.

The institute’s performance, which saw it rated Europe’s highest-placed non-British institution in Thursday’s annual list, was down to very good research scores, despite fewer good marks for staff-student relations.

The top 16 places were shared by US and British universities, with Harvard in pole position for the sixth year running. But Britain’s Cambridge is now second, pushing Yale into third.

Switzerland has seven institutions in the top 200. The Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne came 42nd (up eight positions), Geneva University 72nd (-4), Zurich University 92nd (+14), Basel University 108th (+23), Lausanne University 168th (-7) and Bern University 193rd (-1).

Zurich University pointed out in a statement that the evaluation methods have been considered controversial and that it is not clear whether the results are representative.
