Fink, once a good player himself who won the Champions League in 2001 with Bayern Munich, was dismissed last April from his post as the trainer of Ingolstadt.

That team provided the only experience Fink has had as a professional coach. He also worked with Giovanni Trapattoni as an assistant trainer in summer 2007 with Red Bull Salzburg.

Officials said he was chosen to lead FC Basel based on his playing experience, youth and ability to speak Spanish, English and German fluently.

As a player, Fink, now 41 years old, participated in more than 350 games for Wattenscheid, Karlsruhe and Bayern and logged 40 goals throughout his career.
