Sorin Cartu kicked in part of the substitutes' bench during the match, shattering one side of it.

The match loss took his first division team to the bottom of the group, thereby eliminating them from the Uefa Champions League.

The club announced his dismissal on Thursday, saying the “the values and image of CFR Cluj cannot be associated” with his actions.

CFR Cluj also apologised to the European football body Uefa, to the Swiss side and to fans.

FC Basel meanwhile are still hoping to qualify for the next round. AS Roma's 3-2 victory against FC Bayern München means Basel will need a victory against Bayern combined with a Cluj win over Roma to reach the round of 16.
