Golfer’s persistence rewarded

Spanish golfer Miguel Angel Jimenez, who has played in the European Masters in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana every year since 1988, has finally triumphed there.

In an exciting final round on Sunday, in which at one point his six stroke lead over Edoardo Molinari of Italy had dropped to only one, it was not until he birdied the 17th hole that the 46-year old Spaniard Jimenez had the title in the bag.

Molinari came second and 17 year-old Matteo Manassero, also of Italy, was third.

Of all the times he has played in the Swiss resort Jimenez has twice – in 1993 and 2004 – finished second, and has been in the top ten another six times.

It was his third victory in the European Tour of 2010.

The best-placed Swiss competitor was Julien Clement, who came 54th. Fredrik Svanberg was 63rd.
