Holiday traffic clogs roads

A wave of holidaymakers returning from the spring break in 15 Swiss cantons has stymied traffic on major motorways.

Vehicles were brought to a halt on the A2 motorway on the south side of the Gotthard tunnel in southern Switzerland on Saturday morning, remaining backed up for ten kilometres.

Drivers were faced with a 2.5-hour wait, according to the traffic information service ViaSuisse. Motorists were redirected to the A13 motorway via San Bernardino.

On the north side of the Gotthard tunnel, the line of cars snaked three kilometres approaching the entrance.

ViaSuisse said the traffic would dissipate as the evening approached.

Additional delays linked to a collision on the A1 by Winterthur, near Zurich, blocked that motorway for several hours on Saturday morning.
