Federer and Wawrinka move into fourth round

Roger Federer has won his place in the fourth round at Wimbledon, disposing of French player Marc Gicquel in straight sets on Friday.

Switzerland’s only other remaining player in the tournament, Stanislas Wawrinka, also moves into the next round, after a thigh injury forced his opponent, Mischa Zverev of Germany, to abandon the game.

Federer’s next opponent will be Leyton Hewitt, seeded 20, the last man to win Wimbledon before Federer started his run of five consecutive titles. They are scheduled to meet on Monday.

Despite dropping his serve in the opening game, the world number one needed only 81 minutes to beat Gicquel, ranked 53rd, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1.

Federer has not lost a set in the tournament so far.

Wawrinka was leading 7-5, 6-1 when Zverev was forced to retire.
