Giacometti “Portrait” sets new record
A painting by Alberto Giacometti has become the most expensive work of its type by a Swiss artist.
The oil on canvas, Portrait of Caroline, sold for $14.6 million (SFr15.41 million) at Sotheby’s in New York on Wednesday.
The painting is one in a series depicting Giacometti’s lover and muse during the 1960s.
The previous record for a Giacometti painting was the 1964 work Annette au manteau, which went for $12.6 million in 2007.
Works by the painters Fernand Léger and Edvard Munch sold for $39.2 million and $30.8 million at the same auction.
Earlier in the week, the Giacometti sculpture Grande femme debout II sold for $27.5 million at Christie’s in New York.
