Leuthard lends support to Swiss footballers
Swiss President Doris Leuthard has visited the national football team at their training ground in South Africa to cheer them on in the World Cup which opens on Friday.
“I believe the Swiss people are very proud of this team. They played a fine qualification campaign. Anything extra is icing on the cake!” she told them.
She stressed the importance of team spirit, saying it was vital for success.
But she would not make any predictions ahead of the squad’s first match against Spain, to be played on Wednesday.
“In such a competition a lot depends on the result of the first match,” she said.
She was also full of praise for the World Cup facilities, saying she had not expected to find “such a beautiful pitch”.
The team gave her a strip with a number 20 on the back, while she presented them with red water bottles.
