The match's only goal came in the 60th minute courtesy of Christian Gimenez.

The Ticino side were playing without Fabrizio Bullo and Ludovic Magnin, both injured and the suspended Dario Rota and Julio Rossi.

In other matches, FC Zurich beat UEFA Cup contenders Lausanne 3-1. Lausanne, perhaps suffering from their prodigious feats against Ajax in Amsterdam on Thursday, have now gone six league matches without a win.

Meanwhile, St Gallen beat Neuchatel Xamax 2-0, leaving Neuchatel languishing at the bottom of the relegation play-offs.

Second-placed St Gallen are one point adrift of Lugano.

Lugano's Gimenez heads the season's goalscoring table with 13 to his name, two more than Cameroonian Jean-Michel Tchouga, who plays for Basel and Marcin Kuzba of Lausanne.
