Lugano failed to make up ground on this season's leaders FC Basel on Saturday, drawing 0-0 away to St Gallen.

The match at the Espenmoos stadium was played in wintry conditions and turned out to be a limp affair that failed to warm the 9,300 spectators.

The visitors managed to create best chances of the match, with Julio Rossi looking sharp up front, but these either went begging or were smartly dealt with by the St Gallen goalkeeper, Oliver Stöckli.

St Gallen, who have yet to win at home in the final round of matches, were not short on endeavour but lacked inspiration in the final third of the pitch.

Lugano now trail Basel, who have two games in hand, by five points. On Sunday, the leaders travel to defending champions Grasshoppers Zurich, Sion are at home to Servette, and Young Boys play host to FC Zurich.
