The Swiss in charge of architecture and design at MoMA

Martin Stierli has gone from university lecturer to tastemaker at one of the most important institutions of modern art in the world. (SRF/swissinfo.ch)

An art historian, Stierli was appointed chief curator of architecture and design at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, MoMA, and began his appointment in March 2015. 

Stierli is at the helm of a department whose catalogue includes two of America’s most significant collections by 20th century architects, like the Mies van der Rohe and the Frank Lloyd Wright archives.

Stierli was born in 1974 and raised in the town of Zug. His appointment follows his work as the Swiss National Science Foundation as professor at the Institute of Art History of the University of Zurich. There his research focused on, postwar and postmodern architecture, the representation of architecture in photography and film.

MoMA is often referred as the most influential museum of modern art in world and it attracts an estimated three million visitors a year.
