Mid October is traditionally chestnut time in the southern canton of Ticino. The Muggio Valley holds a chestnut festival in a different village each year. In the past, the nut was an important source of nutrition for locals. Chestnuts have been rediscovered in recent years and are now appreciated from a cultural, environmental and gastronomic point of view. (Photographs by Rémy Steinegger)
