My name is Luca, and yours…?

Luca and Laura are still top of the list of favourite names in German-speaking Switzerland Keystone

Luca and Laura have again topped the list as the most popular names for newborns in Switzerland.

The latest figures, for 2000, show that German-speaking parents are still enamoured with the two names. Laura has been the most fashionable girls’ name since 1995 and Luca the most popular name for boys since 1997. Michelle and Simon were in the second most favoured.

Léa and David were the most popular names among French-speaking parents. Léa, the most popular girls’ name in the region since 1998, maintains the top spot, followed by Laura and Sarah.

David continues to dominate the boys’ names, occupying first position since 1994. Other popular boys’ names were Alexandre, Thomas and Nicolas.

In Ticino, the Italian speakers prefer Luca and Sara, which have finally become the top names in the area after two years in second position. Laura and Fabio are the favourite names in the Rhaeto-Romanic region.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, which has been publishing a list of the most popular names in Switzerland since 1987, there were 78,458 births registered in Switzerland last year, of which 38,056 were girls and 40,402 were boys.
