The 29-year-old was found in a stream at the base of a 20-metre drop. A fellow Irish snowboarder was located nearby unharmed.

The pair had gone off-piste in the afternoon on Monday but became lost in a forest while trying to return to the resort. They called rescue services at dusk and a search party was sent out. Helicopters could not view the area because of overhead fog.

They were found at around 11pm at Montaigner, which is situated at a height of 1,300 metres.

Adverse weather conditions meant the man's body could not be recovered until Tuesday morning.
