Online donations not possible on WikiLeaks site

It is no longer possible to make a donation to WikiLeaks via its online portal, according to the company that has been providing the service.

As the Swiss-Icelandic company Datacell announced on Wednesday, the service has been unavailable since Tuesday evening.

Prior to that, both Visa and MasterCard had announced their intention to block payments to WikiLeaks.

Datacell’s lawyers in Iceland are looking into how the company might respond to the credit card companies.

Now that Visa and MasterCard have withdrawn their services, there are only a few options for making donations to WikiLeaks: bank payments to Iceland’s Landsbanki and Germany’s Commerzbank, plus postal transfers to Australia.

On Monday, Switzerland’s PostFinance closed WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s account because he did not meet the bank’s residence requirements.

Hackers supporting WikiLeaks managed to block the PostFinance website for more than a day. The MasterCard website was also down as of Wednesday evening.
