Bridge on through to the other side
Engineers don’t look down as they work on the Tamina Bridge in eastern Switzerland, which will be the country’s largest arch bridge when completed in 2017.
The bridge, which will cross the Tamina Gorge and join the communes of Pfäfers and Valens in canton St Gallen, will have an arch span of almost 260 metres and a total length of 475 metres. Thirty-five metres have already been completed on the Pfäfers side and 20 on the Valens side (pictured here).
The bridge is being built by German firm Leonhardt, Andrä und PartnerExternal link and is expected to cost CHF56 million ($61.5 million).
