Flight SR 3879 was scheduled to take off on a flight to Zurich. The passengers had not yet embarked when the shooting started.

The masked gunmen, armed with kalashnikovs, watched as several kilogrammes of bank notes were taken on to the plane, before opening fire.

In the ensuing gun battle with police, two attackers were wounded, as well as two police officers and two civilians.

The crew of the Saab 2000, who witnessed the incident, are receiving counselling.

Crossair technicians are travelling to Luxembourg to inspect the plane for damage. A spokesman said it could not be excluded that the plane had been hit during the exchange of fire.
