Swiss hopes of European roller hockey championships home-win ended

Switzerland's Stefan Reichen, middle, battles to keep Swiss roller hockey championship hopes alive Keystone

Any hopes of Switzerland winning the European roller hockey championships being played on home soil have been dashed. On the fourth day of the tournament in the Swiss town of Wimmis, they lost their game against France 1-5.

The Swiss defeat means they do not go through to the semi-finals. The team will now have to battle Holland on Friday to secure fifth or eighth place.

Portugal is set to face Italy in the semi-finals, while Spain is due to play France.

This is the first time since 1969 that the championships have been played on Swiss soil.
