Swiss like to be beside the seaside
The majority of Swiss – in particular young people and families – head to the sea for their summer holidays.
Among the two-thirds of the population who take at least one holiday in summer, 52 per cent go to a coastal resort, according to a study by a media research institute.
The 11,000 respondents from across the country revealed that hiking is currently big among older people from the German-speaking part of the country.
Cruises, on the other hand, only appeal to 12 per cent of Swiss – mostly French and Italian speakers – who the researchers imply are control freaks "leaving nothing to chance and planning their trips meticulously with the help of a travel agent".
