Finance Minister Kaspar Villiger was re-elected to the cabinet by a joint session of parliament on Wednesday.

He was confirmed with 187 votes in the 245-seat parliament.

The vote is part of a traditional re-election procedure, which follows parliamentary elections. Those were held in October and showed the right-wing Swiss People’s Party gaining the most seats in the House of Representatives.

Brief profile:

Kaspar Villiger: Elected to cabinet in 1989. Radical Party member. Current Finance Minister who earlier served as Defence Minister. Played leading role in curbing federal spending by involving key business leaders in round-table talks, and charted course toward balanced budget. Has faced problems in re-organising areas of federal vs. cantonal (i.e. regional) budget authority. He is generally considered a free-market advocate who can settle for compromises.
