The Swiss Post Office says its will issue the stamp to congratulate the winning team on their "masterly sporting and technical achievement."

"Team Alinghi has not only written European sporting history, it also shows the entire world the image of a competitive, innovative Switzerland," said the Post Office in a statement.

The 90-centimes stamp is a so-called event stamp that is issued on special occasions. It would be called "Alinghi, Switzerland" and will depict the racing boat in action.

Production of the stamp is underway and it is expected to hit the stands in the next few days.

It will be available from Post Offices and stamp shops and will also come in the form of a miniature ten-stamp sheet.

The Post Office has a long tradition in issuing event stamps. Last year, it produced a stamp to commemorate Switzerland's accession to the United Nations.
