Swiss ski star to miss Vancouver

Top Swiss skier Lara Gut, who dislocated her hip during training in September, has not recovered enough to take part in next month’s Winter Olympics.

An announcement on her website on Thursday said that the surgeon who operated on her and the Swiss ski team doctor had met in the past few days to discuss her condition and decide on the exercises she must follow to recover her best form.

The doctors agreed that she would not be fit to return to the slopes until the end of January, and would not therefore be able to qualify for selection for the Swiss Olympic team, which takes place on February 1.

The Vancouver games would have been the first that the 18-year-old had competed in. Last year she won silver in the World Championships downhill, behind US star Lindsey Vonn.

Gut is currently taking a brief holiday in the sun abroad, her website said.
