Michel Ansermet shows off his silver medal in Sydney Keystone

The Swiss sportsman, Michel Ansermet, has won the silver medal in the 25-metres rapid fire pistol competition at the Sydney Olympics. It was Switzerland's first medal in a shooting discipline since 1984.

Ansermet came in second with 686.1 points – 1.5 points behind the gold medallist Sergej Alifirenko of Russia. Iulian Raicea of Romania finished third.

Marksman Ansermet, 35, was only able to compete in Sydney thanks to a wild card entry.

He told German-Swiss television after his victory that he was delighted with the result and would be celebrating with his team, trainer and family.

It was Switzerland’s fifth medal so far at the Olympics. They have won one gold, three silvers and a bronze.

The Swiss are rapidly approaching their total from the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta when they won a total of seven medals.

The last time Switzerland won a medal in an Olympic shooting discipline was at the 1984 Los Angeles games when Daniel Nipkow took the silver.
