A pilot for Swissair, Switzerland's national carrier, has found himself in more than hot water after being arrested while jogging in New York's Central Park.

A company spokesman confirmed reports that the un-named pilot had been taken into custody by the New York police. Swissair was unable to say for what offence, but the fact that the pilot was held for 18 hours delayed the departure of the plane he was meant to be flying back to Geneva.

It took 12 hours for a substitute pilot to be found, giving 228 passengers an unexpectedly longer stay in the city.
