Although 163 in the Fifa world rankings, home team Malta dominated Switzerland (ranked 22) throughout the match, with the visitors unable to score from two penalties.

Shots on goal by Alex Frei and Gökhan Inler were efficiently defended by Maltese goalkeeper Justin Haber.

Switzerland also suffered injury setbacks with Stéphane Grichting leaving the field with a fractured finger in the first half and Pirmin Schwegler receiving a concussion following a clash in the penalty area, also in the first half.

The result is a disappointing one for Switzerland who have recently had good results against Wales (4-1) and Ukraine (2-2). They will be hoping to improve on their performance against Bulgaria in a 2012 European Cup qualifier on March 23.

In other results, Portugal went down 1-2 to Argentina in a friendly match held in Geneva on Wednesday.
