The host nation's Bernard Tomic defeated Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in the first match.

The playoff continues on Saturday with the top two Swiss in a doubles match against Hewitt and Chris Guccione.

The final two matches of the playoff will see Federer against Tomic and Wawrinka face Hewitt.

Switzerland has never managed to beat the Aussies in the four times that they have met in the Davis Cup.

The winner of the playoff takes a place in the Davis Cup World Group for next year, while the loser returns to play zonal qualifiers.
