Switzerland to represent Russia in South Ossetia

Switzerland will represent Russia's diplomatic interests in Georgia, the foreign ministry said on Friday.

A statement said it had approved an official request made by Russia and details would be discussed with Georgia and Russia in the coming days.

Russian ties to the former Soviet republic were severed after the August conflict over the breakaway region of South Ossetia.

Switzerland already represents the interests of the United States in Cuba and in Iran and Cuba's interests in the US.

Georgia's ambassador to Sweden said on Friday that his country had asked Sweden to handle its diplomatic relations with Russia.
