The 23-year-old player from canton Thurgau (WTA 89) went out in straight sets (3-6, 3-6) to Spain's Maria Sanchez Lorenzo, currently ranked two places lower than Vavrinec in the WTA standings.

The $170,000 tournament marked Vavrinec's first appearance in the main draw of an event since her second round exit at the Australian Open. Previously this season, she was eliminated in the first round in Auckland and the second round in Hobart.
