Thirty-year-old Weisshaupt from Zurich took her second consecutive victory by beating Laura Milani of Italy by 0.95 seconds. Third came Juliane Rasmussen ofDenmark 1' 19" behind.

The gold medal crowned a season that had begun badly for Weisshaupt, who had suffered an injury.

But Weisshaupt was favourite for Sunday's event after a semi-final race in which she finished almost two seconds in front of the United States rower Meghan Sarbanis.
