Basel’s Champions League woes continue

FC Basel have continued their poor Champions League qualifying run by losing their Group C match against Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk.

The game was played in pouring rain and cold temperatures at the Olympiysky stadium in Donetsk on Wednesday and was dominated from the start by the home side who came away with a final score of 5-0.

Shakhtar goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov made several saves to ensure Basel did not score.

It was Basel’s second 5-0 defeat in the Champions League this season, after they lost to Barcelona on October 22.

Shakhtar have six points from five games, trailing second-place Sporting Lisbon by three points. Basel are bottom with one point. The top two sides qualify for the next round.

In their final group match, Shakhtar will play at Barcelona and Basel will host Sporting on December 9.
