Hingis crashes to unseeded opponent

Martina Hingis never managed to take control of the match in San Diego Keystone

Switzerland's world number one tennis player, Martina Hingis, has been beaten unexpectedly in the quarter-finals of the WTA Carlsbad tournament in San Diego, California.

Top seed and defending champion Hingis was beaten 6-3, 6-3 by the unseeded American, Amy Frazier.

Frazier was in complete control of the 64-minute match, hitting numerous winners from the baseline.
It was her first victory over Hingis.

The match was only the second played by Hingis in the past month. She had taken a three-week break following her quarter-finals elimination from Wimbledon by Venus Williams.

Hingis remains top of the ATP women’s world rankings, but she has not won a Grand Slam tournament for two years. The Carlsbad tournament was seen as a warm-up to the US Open – the last major competition of the international tennis season.
