Ice hockey squad edges Belarus
Julien Sprunger scored twice on Monday to lead the Swiss hockey team to a scrappy 2-1 win over Belarus at the World Ice Hockey Championship in Canada.
Switzerland drew first blood in the first period when the forward Sprunger scored on the Belarussian goalkeeper, Vitali Koval.
Belarus tied the game in the second period but Switzerland went ahead for good at 34:36, when Sprunger scored again.
The game featured 21 penalties, with both teams penalised for having too many men on the ice in the third period. Near the end of the game, Belarus player Andrei Kostitsyn was cited for misconduct.
Monday’s victory in Quebec City was the second in as many matches for the Swiss squad, which includes three players from the National Hockey League.
The team will play its next game on Wednesday against Sweden.
