Threatened workers at the Swiss plants of the German rail-technology group, Adtranz, have voted not to stage a warning strike in favour of getting around the negotiating table with management.
Union officials say seven out of ten workers who took part in a consultation would like to see a “constructive collaboration” between their representatives and company bosses. Unions would like to see if they could force bosses to make concessions that would facilitate a buy-out.
Last November, Adtranz announced plans to close its two plants in Switzerland, near Basel and Zurich, threatening around 700 jobs. The authorities in Pratteln, in Basel-Country set up a task-force to try to save the local plant, while demonstrations and strikes were held in both Pratteln and at the plant in Zurich-Oerlikon.
