Basel port sees sharp rise in river goods business

Business at Basel's Rhine port is booming. The amount of tonnage handled rose by 21 per cent in the first six months of the year compared to the same period in 1999.

The Basel docks handled an additional 750,000 tonnes of goods, according to the latest figures. A total of 4,267 million tonnes came through the port.

The authorities say business is expected to increase further in the second half of the year, with more fuel products likely to be transported in the run-up to winter.

Comparative figures for the month of June were down. This is because June 1999 saw frenetic activity in Basel as the docks sought to catch up with trade lost because of high waters in May and early June last year.

Basel is Switzerland’s main port for Rhine transport. The river flows from Switzerland through to Rotterdam.
