Basel raises ceiling with new building
The city of Basel is to gain a new landmark. The authorities have announced that construction of a giant tower will begin next July. At 105 metres, the new building will be the tallest in Switzerland.
The contract for building the 30-story tower was signed on Friday. It will form part of the Basel exhibition site and will house a luxury hotel, and office premises.
The cost of construction is estimated at SFr150 million ($86 million) and will be covered by the developing company, Swiss Prime Site.
Building work is not expected to be completed until summer 2003.
