The most popular Swiss film in 1999 was "Beresina or the last days of Switzerland", according to figures just released by a government-sponsored body for promoting the national film industry.
The most popular Swiss film in 1999 was “Beresina or the last days of Switzerland”, according to figures just released by a government-sponsored body for promoting the national film industry.
With box office sales totalling nearly 118,000, the political satire directed by Daniel Schmid helped the industry improve its share of the home market from 2.1 per cent in 1998 to 2.5 per cent last year. The total number of tickets sold for 109 feature films and documentaries was 379,000.
The biggest increase was in the category of short films, whose market share rose from two per cent in 1998 to six per cent last year.
“Succès Cinema”, which is financed by the Swiss Culture Office, French-Swiss television and the Swissimage Foundation, spent SFr3 million on promoting films. The total amount allocated to a film is shared by the director, producer, distributor and the cinemas.
