At least eight people have been killed and nearly 150 injured after a train on its way from the Netherlands to Switzerland crashed near the German town of Brühl outside Cologne. Nine of the injured were Swiss.

The accident occurred in the early hours on Sunday, when the overnight express from Amsterdam to Basel was derailed as it changed from one track to another because of building work on the line. Five carriages and the locomotive left the railway and ploughed down an embankment, into a nearby house.

Around 300 passengers were aboard the train. A spokesman for the Swiss Federal Railways said care teams were handling queries in Basel, Berne, Olten and Brig. A telephone hotline has also been set up. Information can be found in German on 0512 205050 and in French on 0512 205060.

German police have not yet ruled out finding more bodies among the wreckage.
