The traditional Carnival season is getting into full swing in Switzerland. Thousands of revellers have taken to the streets of Lucerne and other towns in predominately Catholic areas of the country, to enjoy what many consider to be the best days of the year.

An estimated 10,000 carnival enthusiasts were out in the streets of Lucerne to witness the Big Bang, the official start to the nearly week-long celebrations. Following tradition, Brother Fritschi, a legendary figure wearing a wooden mask, launched the festivities from a small boat on the lake. He threw oranges and sweets to the crowds gathered to welcome him in town, accompanied by the sound of loud music bands.

Thousands also took part in celebrations in the towns of Solothurn, St Gallen and Bellinzona, in canton Ticino. The people, many wearing colourful costumes and masks, joined in the festivities, which over the coming days will include pageants and numerous public performances in the streets and restaurants.

While the revelries in these Catholic parts will reach their climax over the weekend, people in Basel and Berne will have to keep their party fever in check a little longer. Basel, which arguably has the best known carnival in Switzerland, will kick off its celebrations on March 13. The capital, Berne, which has seen a revival of the tradition over the past few years, puts on the party gear next Thursday.
