Small breweries plead for bigger market share

Small breweries are demanding that the Competition Commission prevent the block sale of Switzerland's biggest brewery, Feldschlösschen.
The group representing small and medium sized brewers says that Feldschlösschen has built up a quasi-monopoly in the beer market through an aggressive policy of acquisitions. Feldschlösschen controls close to 50 per cent of the sector.
It wants the Competition Commission to order the separate sale of different brands such as Valaisanne and Cardinal.
It’s also asking Feldschlösschen to allow contracted restaurateurs to choose the range of beers that they take.
And it wants taxes on beer to be brought into line with other European countries as quickly as possible. It says that the interim system is disadvantaging small- and medium-sized breweries.
Feldschlösschen-Hurlimann is selling its drinks division to concentrate on its real estate business.
