Swiss Post Office plans further savings

Streich believes the liberalisation of European post offices is a reality Keystone

The Swiss Post Office has said it aims to achieve "substantial savings" by reorganising its network of offices in line with market needs. The head of the company's development plan, Jean-Pierre Streich, has defended the proposed rearrangement.

In an interview with the Berner-Zeitung newspaper, Streich hinted at the possibility of developing mobile post offices and suggested cooperating with concerns which operate similar businesses. He said the management of the Post Office had to work within the constraints of the market.

Streich believes the public service mandate of the Post Office has to be kept in mind at all times.

But, with the liberalisation of postal services in Europe by 2007 a reality, Streich argued that “sooner or later, Switzerland is going to have to adapt.”

Developing relations and alliances on an international scale is the way forward, Streich believes. “The alliance with TNT (of the Netherlands) is a first step towards future collaboration with postal services in the Netherlands,” Streich said.
