Unemployment continues to fall

Unemployment has sunk to a 10-year low in Switzerland, although the rate of decline is slowing, according to figures released on Thursday by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs.

At the end of August, there were 63,708 people without a job, 1,432 fewer than at the end of July. The rate of unemployment remains unchanged at 1.8 per cent.

The Secretariat reported that canton Geneva remains worst affected by joblessness (4.2 per cent), followed by cantons Vaud (2.8 per cent) and Ticino (2.7 per cent).

The labour director in the Secretariat, Jean-Luc Nordmann, said he expected the moderate decline in August to bring the September rate down to 1.7 per cent.

However, the Secretariat continues to forecast a two per cent rate for the year as a whole.
