For the first time this year, the Swiss tennis player, George Bastl, has reached the semi-finals of an ATP tournament. He beat the Russian Andrei Stoljarov 6-4 3-6 6-3 at the tournament in Tashkent.

He has now beaten Stoljarov three times in a row.

Bastl will now have to take on the world number two seed and US Open winner, Marat Safin of Russia. He only ever had to face the 20-year-old Russian on one occasion in a match during this year’s French Open which he lost in four sets.

A year ago the French-speaking Swiss made it to the finals in Tashkent where he was knocked out by the German, Nicolas Kiefer, in straight sets.
