Firms’ polluting habits go online
Details of pollution emitted by 200 major companies in Switzerland have been published for the first time online by the Federal Environment Office.
The move is part of Switzerland’s commitment to increase transparency by providing public access to information about pollution and the movement of waste within its borders.
Information about the companies’ track records with 86 pollutants in 2007 was made accessible on the federal office’s website as of Thursday.
The Environment Office says the register will be used to control the sustainable management of pollution and the transfer of waste.
Understanding how certain chemicals are used and the resulting pollution could also promote innovation and cost-cutting, it said.
