Thousands visit equestrian event
A national equestrian festival in Avenches has attracted 20,000 visitors over four days.
Around 1,000 horses were taking part in the Equus Helveticus, an event only in its second year. The programme included dressage, sporting challenges, races and horse riding lessons.
The festival is organised by the Swiss National Stud and the National Equestrian Institute of Avenche.
The popularity of the event is good news for the Swiss National Stud, which is currently under threat of funding cuts by the government.
Around 62,000 people have signed a petition requesting that the National Stud not be included in a package of budget-cutting measures.
