An oil painting by Swiss painter Félix Vallotton has sold for SFr2.43million ($2.49 million) at an auction in Zurich.

“Coucher de soleil à Grâce, ciel orange et violet (Sunset at Grace, orange and violet sky), painted in 1918, had been expected to fetch SFr1.8-2.5 million.

The work features a view of the Seine estuary from the Côte de Grâce and belongs to the artist’s sunset series, which he painted from 1910 onward.

The price was the highest ever paid for a work from the sunset series.

Félix Vallotton was born in 1865 into a middle-class family in Lausanne and died of cancer in Paris at the age of 60. His paintings were marked by a sober, often bitter realism, and he was also an important figure in the development of the modern woodcut.
