Botanical garden festivities prove popular

Around 100,000 people have visited gardens in the past nine days as part of the Botanica 2011 event.

A total of 23 botanical gardens across the country took part in the festivities, which finished on Sunday.

A spell of good weather and free admission helped ensure the event “succeeded beyond all expectations”, according to organisers.

Visitors could do tours, take part in workshops, meet gardeners and botanists, and attend lectures and concerts – all centred on the theme of plants and symbols.

The Botanica event was being held for the fifth time. Next year’s will take place from June 16-24 and honour Geneva philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s thinking that man should return to nature.
