Hingis defeats Rubin in California

Martina Hingis struggled to victory against Chanda Rubin Keystone

The world number one tennis player, Switzerland's Martina Hingis, has beaten Chanda Rubin of the United States in the WTA tournament in Los Angeles.

Hingis needed three sets to defeat Rubin in Manhattan Beach, after dropping the first 5-7. The world number one struggled through the second, eventually gaining the upper hand over the Louisiana player.

Two sets seemed enough for Rubin, who only managed to win one game in the third, losing the match 5-7, 7-5, 6-1.

Hingis’s victory comes six days after she was defeated by the unseeded American, Amy Frazier, in the WTA Carlsbad tournament in San Diego.

The WTA matches are seen as warm-up for the US Open, the last grand slam of the year. Hingis has yet to win a grand slam this season.
