Hingis through to second round of US Open
The world number one tennis player and top-seed, Switzerland's Martina Hingis, is through to the second round of the US Open tournament after her victory over Russia's Alina Jidkova on Monday.
Hingis beat her opponent in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 in a match lasting just 56 minutes. She will meet the American Kristina Brandi in the next round.
The tournament at Flushing Meadow is make or break time for Hingis as it is her last chance to win a grand slam tournament this year.
Hingis has not won a major championship title since the 1999 Australian Open and is clearly aware of her recent record: “If you want to be number one, you have to win at least one grand slam tournament.”
Meanwhile, another Swiss player, Emmanuelle Gagliardi, was knocked out of the US Open after she was defeated in straight sets by Jennifer Capriati of the United States.
Capriati, who is seeded 15th, beat Gagliardi 6-4, 6-0. Gagliardi, who is ranked 80th, twisted her right ankle while she was trailing 0-5 in the second set and required an injury timeout.
Capriati, who reached the US Open semi-finals at the age of 15 in 1991, needed just one hour and six minutes of court time to advance. The match was delayed half way through for one hour and 45 minutes due to rain.
A third Swiss player, Miroslava Vavrinec is also out of the tournament. Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia defeated her 6-4, 6-2.
